Spain

Spain is a destination made for sunshine, easy days and memorable experiences, with golden beaches, lively cities, historic towns and a warm Mediterranean rhythm that draws travellers back year after year.

Spain

Spain is best known for its beaches, food, fiestas, architecture, relaxed outdoor lifestyle and excellent value for money, but what makes it so appealing is the sheer variety it offers. Along the Mediterranean coast, you can find family-friendly resorts, stylish marinas, long sandy beaches and quiet coves, while cities such as Barcelona, Valencia, Seville and Madrid bring art, history, shopping, nightlife and world-class food.

The Costa del Sol is loved for its sunshine and resort comfort, the Costa Blanca for its easy-going beach towns, and the Costa Brava for its rugged coastline and pretty seaside villages. Spain is ideal for family holidays, couples’ escapes, beach breaks, city stays and longer getaways where you want reliable warmth, good food and plenty to do without making the holiday feel complicated.

Visa

Spain is part of the Schengen Area. UK passport holders can usually visit Spain for short tourism stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period without needing a visa, although passports must meet validity rules and travellers may be asked to show proof of accommodation, return or onward travel, travel insurance and sufficient funds.

The EU Entry/Exit System is now being introduced across the Schengen Area for many non-EU short-stay travellers, which may involve registering biometric details such as a photo or fingerprints at the border.

Entry rules can change, so travellers should always check the latest official advice before booking or travelling.

Climate

Spain’s climate varies by region, but the southern and eastern coasts enjoy a warm Mediterranean feel, with hot summers, mild winters and plenty of sunshine through much of the year. June to September is the main season for beach holidays, especially along the Costa del Sol, Costa Blanca and Costa Brava, while May, early June, September and October are excellent for travellers who prefer warm weather with fewer crowds.

Inland cities such as Seville, Madrid and Córdoba can become very hot in July and August, so spring and autumn are often better for sightseeing, wandering and enjoying long outdoor meals.

Available Transport Options in Spain

Spain is generally easy to travel around, with strong air links, excellent trains, useful bus routes and plenty of car rental options. For city breaks, trains and public transport are often the simplest choice, while beach resorts, rural areas and coastal day trips may be easier with transfers or a hire car.

Air Travel

Mainland Spain is served by several major airports, including Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas, Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat, Málaga-Costa del Sol, Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández, Valencia, Seville, Bilbao, Girona-Costa Brava, Reus and Murcia. Málaga is ideal for the Costa del Sol, Alicante works well for the Costa Blanca, Barcelona and Girona are useful for Catalonia and the Costa Brava, while Madrid and Seville are strong choices for cultural city breaks and wider touring.

Train

Spain has an excellent rail network, with high-speed trains linking major cities such as Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Seville, Málaga and Alicante. Train travel is one of the most comfortable ways to combine cities, especially for travellers who want to avoid internal flights and make the journey feel part of the experience. Regional trains are also useful in some coastal areas, although not every resort is directly connected.

Bus

Buses are widely used across Spain and can be very helpful for reaching smaller towns, resorts and areas not served by train. They are often good value and can connect coastal destinations, airport areas and inland towns with fewer changes. Journey times can be longer than travelling by train, but for certain routes they are the most practical option.

Car Rental

Car rental is a good option for travellers who want to explore beyond one resort or city, especially along the Costas, in Andalusia or through countryside and village routes. A hire car gives more freedom for beach-hopping, visiting hill towns and finding quieter restaurants away from the main tourist streets. In larger cities, parking can be limited and driving can feel busy, so it is often better to use a car for the coastal or countryside part of the trip rather than the whole stay.
