Portugal
Portugal is a destination full of warmth, colour and coastal charm, where golden beaches, tiled streets, Atlantic views and relaxed days come together with a wonderfully easy-going pace.
Portugal
Portugal is best known for its beaches, historic cities, seafood, wine, welcoming atmosphere and excellent value, but its real appeal is the way it feels both familiar and distinctive. The Algarve delivers classic sunshine with dramatic cliffs, sandy coves and family-friendly resorts, while Lisbon offers tiled façades, hilltop viewpoints, yellow trams and lively neighbourhoods that spill out into the evening. Further north, Porto brings riverside character, wine cellars, bridges and a moodier, more romantic edge, while Madeira adds lush scenery, mountain walks and year-round appeal.
Portugal is ideal for travellers who want sunshine without losing a sense of place. It works beautifully for beach holidays, city breaks, couples’ escapes, family trips and longer stays where good food, warm hospitality and scenic surroundings matter just as much as the weather.

Visa
Portugal is part of the Schengen Area. UK passport holders can usually visit Portugal for short tourism stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period without needing a visa, although passports must meet Schengen validity rules. Travellers may be asked to show an onward or return ticket and proof of enough money for their stay.
The EU Entry/Exit System is now being implemented across the Schengen Area, which may involve registering biometric details such as fingerprints and a photo at the border.
Entry rules can change, so travellers should always check the latest official advice before booking or travelling.
Climate
Portugal has a generally mild and sunny climate, although conditions vary between the mainland, the islands and the north. The Algarve is warm and dry through much of the year, with the main beach season running from late spring to early autumn. Lisbon and Porto are excellent in spring and autumn, when the weather is comfortable for sightseeing, outdoor dining and exploring on foot.
July and August are the busiest and hottest months in the main coastal areas, while May, June, September and October are often ideal for warm weather with a more relaxed feel. Madeira is a strong year-round option, especially for travellers who enjoy walking, gardens and scenic landscapes as well as sunshine.
Available Transport Options in Portugal
Portugal is easy to enjoy whether you are staying in one resort or planning to explore more widely. Cities are best discovered on foot, by tram, metro or taxi, while trains, coaches, transfers and car hire are useful for travelling between regions, beaches and countryside areas.
Air Travel
Portugal’s main airports include Lisbon, Porto, Faro, Madeira and airports in the Azores, giving travellers a good choice of arrival points depending on the style of holiday. Faro is the main gateway for the Algarve, Lisbon works well for city breaks and onward travel, Porto is ideal for northern Portugal, and Madeira is the key arrival point for island holidays. Domestic flights can also help with longer itineraries, especially when combining the mainland with Madeira or the Azores.
Train
Portugal’s rail network is a comfortable way to travel across much of the mainland, especially between Lisbon, Porto, Coimbra, Braga and the Algarve. The Alfa Pendular and Intercidades services are useful for longer journeys, while regional trains can help with shorter trips and local exploring. Trains are less useful for rural villages and some beach areas, so it is worth checking connections before relying on rail for the whole trip.
Bus
Coaches and local buses are widely used across Portugal and can be very helpful for reaching towns, resorts and areas not directly served by train. They are often good value and can connect smaller places more easily than rail, particularly in parts of the Algarve and inland regions. For day trips, always check return times in advance, especially outside the main summer season.
Car Rental
Car rental is a good choice for travellers who want to explore beyond the main towns and resorts. It is especially useful in the Algarve, the Douro Valley, Alentejo, Madeira and more rural coastal areas, where viewpoints, beaches and villages are often spread out. In Lisbon and Porto, driving can be busy and parking can be limited, so it is often easier to collect a car after a city stay rather than keeping one for the full trip.
